new single by N8n ‘Losing Control’

Did you know my brother was a pop star? You probably already by now I come from a musical family. So my brother N8n (pronounced Nathan) is an artist, a deejay, a drummer and a performer. He’s always playing somewhere around the world, from London to Capetown, from Shanghai to Tel Aviv. And in between his live gigs, he hops in and out of the studio to record his songs. This one was produced in New York. ‘Losing Control’ is the second single from his forthcoming album ‘Imaginathan’. The new single is another catchy tune with a solid hook, hear it once and it will stick in your head. The production is minimal with N8N & producer Scott Jacoby (John legends, …) bangin’ the beat, a Fender jazz bass to give it that depth, the acoustic guitar and clavinet playin’ the groove, while the the warm harmonies and 80’s synth pad take over the chorus. Lyrically N8N sings about a bad case of the ex. ‘Goin’ out of my mind – and into your Soul – It’s breaking my heart – Feels like I’m Losing Control’

Gordon Pool

Swimming is a great thing. For body and soul. Studies have shown swimming keeps you biologically younger. When I’m on my way to Gordon Pool, my back already thanks me. I always take a fresh juice with me and take a moment before I enter the water. Sipping on my banana or acaï juice, I look up to the blue skies, the palm trees; I look around to the sea and the Marina and I’m grateful each time again. Then I jump in and start my 1,5km crawl swim. The repetition of the movement under water brings you in some sort of trance. I always get the best thinking done there and come out with my most creative ideas. Gordon’s olympic pool water is set at a fixed temperature of 24° and is made of salty groundwater extracted from wells at a depth of about 150 meters which is extra rich in minerals.

Gordon Pool was originally established in 1956 and designed for ‘convenient swimming by the sea, to enjoy the benefits of the beach, without suffering the disadvantages from waves and sand.’ In those years, Gordon Pool was the ultimate gathering point, all week, everyday, from sunrise till sunset. No need to wonder why: from the salt and the crystal clear water with its minerals, to the gorgeous scenery, Gordon swimming pool made no difference between rich and poor, between famous and ordinary; free spirit was the vibe.

By 2006 the pool had some serious problems: its physical condition was deteriorating and it was impossible to remodel due to conservation laws. The golden years of swimming were over. The private owner was unable to continue to maintain the pool. Then came the talk of destructing the pool and the protests of the swimmers until the city of Tel Aviv-Jaffa decided to renovate the pool and the surrounding area in order to revive it. After a huge financial investment, the pool complex was renovated, joined by sunbathing beds, shaded areas, a toddlers pool and playground, a bike path and parking for direct access and a huge fitness center including aerobic classes and a spa.

Since July 2009, Gordon Pool is back in full force and enjoys an international reputation and an influx of visitors to discover the benefits of swimming and what goes with it…

The Oddword

boys

Ever seen an electro crowd doing a mosh pit? With The Oddword you can even expect the most unexpected.

Antwerp based DJ duo Boy Kortekaas and Ylli Engels are no strangers in the music industry. Boy Kortekaas started playing music when he was 15. At the age of 18, he already released his first track on the label of Dj Hell “Gigolo records”. That’s the same label where Tiga and Boys Noize began their career. A couple of years later, Boy met Ylli Engels, another great dj from Antwerp. Until then Ylli played in underground clubs in Belgium. They had such a good connection so they began “The Oddword”. In 2009 The Oddword started making music. It didn’t take long before the world started noticing them. In 2010 their first EP “Kortelas” was released on the American label Crux Records. A lot of remixes followed for artists such as Antention, Dumme Jungs, The Subs, Haezer and other great producers. In 2011 they released their second EP called “The Fire EP” on the German label Mähtrasher records. 2012 was without a doubt a fantastic year for The Oddword playing at the biggest festivals in Belgium such as Tomorrowland, Laundry Day and many more. The Oddword brings raw electronic bass music in a whirlpool of electro & techy beats. Their hyped up beats make the crowds go crazy. Not only did they conquer Belgian territory, also Miami WMC & the rest of Europe followed. Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Switzerland and France were not left unharmed.

The best experience they have had (until their feature on Marilyn & Josephine of course ;-)) was without doubt debuting in South Africa, hitting up Cape Town and Johannesburg, start of 2013.  Now the boys from The Oddword are back in the studio, working on a new EP, several remixes and some kick-ass collaborations…

Being internationally recognized does not make them love Antwerp any less. There is only one club however where they feel appreciated the most: Petrol. “There aren’t a lot of clubs in Antwerp who play our kind of music, that’s why we mostly play in clubs outside of Antwerp and Belgium. But when it comes to festivals, Belgium is a great country!” Music to the Oddword ears as they will be playing this years edition of Pukkelpop, the second largest festival in Belgium! And how about Israel? “We haven’t played in Israel yet, but we have heard it’s nightlife is better than Ibiza’s, so we wouldn’t mind being invited over? (laughs)”

Cafe Europa

Last week Café Europa celebrated its first anniversary. And it sure has been a good year for the restaurant. Ever since its opening, Cafe Europa became one of the hottest spots in Tel Aviv. An outdoor restaurant. With a bar on the first floor and a terrace.  And a great authentic atmosphere. The restaurant is located on Rothschild Boulevard, meaning you can easily walk around and discover the area before and after. I go there very often both with family, friends and with groups for work.

The menu has a few cute small sharing dishes and an Israeli-inspired variation of fish, meat and veggie main courses. I always go for my favorite: the lamb tortellini. The place offers special cocktails and has an interesting wine menu, including some of Israel’s finest boutique wines (try the Kerem Shvo and don’t bother taking a glass only; go for the bottle).

The celebrations went on all week and ended with a special live act on Friday night by a local band called Boom Pam. Boom Pam define themselves as “a Mediterranean surf rock tuba drive power trio, seasoned with dueling guitars and alcohol soaked wedding party ecstasy.” I felt like I was in a Tarantino movie Middle-Eastern style. Everybody was dancing, or maybe not everybody and it was more those chasers (half shots) working their magic. After the gig, we kept on dancing on Dror’s vinyl mixes, a nostalgic tribute to the Fifties, a lot of laughing and dancing, and drinking, and laughing, and dancing the twist….
